2020 dealt a heavy blow to theater and musical programming across the world. UNCSA reconfigured both its academic and production processes in order to meet this challenge - and through this reconfiguration process the Winter Salon was born.

Winter Salon 2021 replaces the traditional UNCSA Winter Opera with 2 "Salon Operas" - traditionally smaller in both scope and scale - in order to maximize available production resources while minimizing the risk to students and staff during production and staging. To this end the set had to function with minimal major scenic changes between operas, utilize a reduced footprint to increase the distance between the set and the theater's apron, and provide multiple entrances and exits to allow for social distancing both on-set and in the wings.

Additionally the set is designed to be used in the Piedmont Opera's Winter Season productions, as well as being used as the architectural base for the UNCSA Spring Opera. To this end the set is designed with a series of hot-swappable panels within the panel moulding and multiple "secret" openings.
