Adapted from the German play by Frank Wedekind, “Spring Awakening” is a powerful

coming-of-age story played out in an electrifying fusion of adolescence and rock ‘n’ roll.

We chose to set this performance in a cast-iron gothic revival structure - a church, school, and prison all at once. Within this backdrop we were able to explore the organic nature of youth - growing uncontrollably and beautifully - even among structures that began to decay as soon as they were erected by the generations that came before. The musical concludes with the massive windows at the rear of the set flying open to reveal a glowing stand of wheat and wild flowers backed by a summer sky as "Purple Summer" crescendos.
